One of the top holidays in the United States isn’t an offical holiday at all. It’s Halloween. While some fundamentalist organizations may protest the “evil” associations of All Hallows Eve, most Americans just want to dress up and have fun for a day. Whether it’s kids looking forward to trick or treating or adult wearing Halloween costumes to the office to add some fun to the day, Halloween is a great time to bring out fantasies, super heros, and any other identity you’ve always wanted to try on.
Kids have a tendency to favor cartoon characters and super hero costumes. They identify with everything from Disney characters to SpiderMan, from Darth Vader to Goofy. Some kids will beg to start wearing their costumes days before Halloween itself, especially if their school pagents and parties are early due to Halloween falling on a weekend. Parties held by church groups, community centers, and in private homes also give kids a chance to parade their costumes and maybe even win prizes.
Adults with liberal bosses will be able to wear “work-appropriate” costumes to the office. This is a very important distinction because many adult costumes tend toward “naughty” or sexy fantasies rather than specific characters. Nurses, schoolgirls, and vampires are usually popular and this year you can expect to see more than a few guys dressing up as the Old Spice Guy in a towel — though probably not at the office.
