Protecting Your Home While You’re Away

Protecting Your Home While You’re Away

The holiday season is just around the corner, and as we began preparing for the change in weather and decorating the house, many people are planning to head out of town.   Whether you plan to leave for Thanksgiving, Christmas or both, you will want to make sure your home is safe while you are away.  One of the key elements to leaving your home for a week, or even a weekend, is to make it appear as though someone is there.  Now don’t worry, this is not as hard as Kevin McCallister made it in the movie Home Alone.
One of the most obvious signs that someone is gone is a large pile of newspapers in front of the house and no car. So the first thing to do before you take off on your winter vacation is arrange to have someone come and get your mail and newspaper.  If you don’t have anyone to pick it up for you, the post office will allow you to have your mail stopped.  You can fill out the form in person or online.  Also, if possible leave your car, or a friend’s, parked in the driveway.
Another common sign that someone is not home is a consistently dark house.  If you have someone coming over to check your house or water your plants, you can have them turn lights and the radio or TV on and off.  Or another option is a timer.  Available at many retail stores, timers offer you the ability to set whatever lamps or radios you want to turn on and off at certain times.
As far as security goes, it’s always a good idea to have an alarm company that will call you if your alarm goes off.  You will also want to go through your house and make sure all the windows and doors are shut and locked and all major electronics like fans, computers, and other appliances are turned off and unplugged.  If you have blinds, like those available at Next Day Blinds, make sure they are shut completely.  Next Day Blinds reviews are extremely limited because of the variety and quality of blinds and shutters that they offer.  A high quality window treatment from Next Day Blinds will further prevent someone from being able to see inside your home while you are away.
By following each of these tips, you can take that extra step to ensure that your home is safe so you enjoy the holiday festivities worry free.
