NY on a budget

October 13th, 2009

With this economy I didn’t think we were going to be able to get to New York this year. But we did it, after some looking we found some New York cheap hotel where we saved enough money on the rooms we were actually able to make the trip.

With careful planning and thinking ahead we saved. Using public transportation to get ourselves all around New York. We had been to Manhattan many times before and never to Brooklyn or any where else around the area for that matter. We had always located ourselves centrally and could walk to nearly everything we wanted to see or just a straight shot up town or down town on a bus.

This time we studied the public transportation maps and used that knowledge to explore more than we had in the past. Not wanting to spend a lot of money finding local eateries, walking interesting neighborhoods and window shopping were really what we were looking for. We decided to go out to Park Slopes Brooklyn. A place I had head about. The streets are lined with the late 19th century brown stone houses that were very typical for that period of time in the New York city area. Taking the subway out there was easy and we really feel like we got an idea of what it is like to live in Brooklyn and commute into Manhattan. It was a very different experience that the usual very tourist way we usually see NY.

I am sure glad we didn’t cancel the trip all together and did look into less expensive alternatives than the usual places we stay. And because of that we saw areas of the city we more than likely would never have had and really enjoyed our selves more than many other trips.
