Leicester, one of the eldest of Great Britain’s cities was first inhabited close to two thousand years ago. The Celtic Corieltauvi tribe are among the first known to live there, wherein Leicester was their capital of the territory of the now, East Midlands. Now it is the largest city, located just at the edge of the National Forest and along the banks of the Soar River. The population of those in the city and the surrounding farms totals just over four hundred and forty thousand, which makes it the tenth largest of the cities in Great Britain, and the thirteenth largest city in the United Kingdom. The rich heritage and the diversity of the cultures makes this a charming and interesting travel destination. Any one of the Leicester hotels will have maps and pamphlets outlining the museums and the historical sites of interest.
Leicester is a thriving manufacturing center and a major force in the commercial industries of England, so shopping is a great past-time for many who come to visit. Many of the companies work in either clothing and textiles, print making, and a variety of diverse restaurants and pubs. Over the last thirty years there have been a number of regeneration works in progress, which have served to make Leicester a better place to visit, to work and to live. The roadway systems make this city accessible from all points, with roads leading from London, Birmingham and each of the airports of England. This has been true throughout history, as many in the country have chosen Leicester as their meeting place. This accounts for the variation in the cultures and the races that now make this their permanent home land and is responsible for the continuation of the import and export businesses. This is true for many different cultures, but the last thirty years has seen a dramatic increase in the Asian owned companies. For a bit of diversity and the rich cultural history, Leicester is one of the most interesting destinations in England.
