Part of my job is to attend town meeting to see if I can help suggest ways to go ‘green’ . I was pleasantly surprised at attending Brockenhurst Transition Meeting. It seem as if the whole town is on board with making their place a better place to live not only for them, but for all the visitors and for the next generation of human beings. The meeting generated lots of ideas. Many are tentative at the moment and will require further exploration, which is also where I will come in handy, but for now, it’s the best start I’ve seen any city or town take on.
They want to implement allotments concerning local vegetable growing and sharing. Residence providing part of their garden to people looking to grow vegetables will benefit the neighbourly community. Also create allotments for school to encourage children to grow their own food. They also want to educate not only garden owners about using composting bins, but also educate non gardeners to compost and share their composting with current gardeners.
They will begin to educate individuals to buy locally with ‘buy local’ credit cards which offer 10 percent discounts in all local shops. They will implements a Car sharing scheme for journeys outside of Brockenhurst. They will also encourage that everyone did one less trip to an out of town food shop. Both proposals will reduce the CO2 emissions by 13 percent. They have a person already setting up a website that will list people who are going to a large supermarket and offer car space. The list goes on, like water saving ideas, renewable energy, saving energy, Bicycling, Bio-diesel was mentioned, recycling and they wanted to continue, but it was midnight when they came to recycling. As I headed back to one of the Brockenhurst hotels, my heart was singing. I was so amazed at how much this town really cares.
