Thailand has an interesting and complicated history, and Bangkok, one of the world’s truly metropolitan cities, demonstrates the history of Thailand in a compact and vibrant way. There are fabulous artists living and working here, and some do work that is very much geared toward the tourist trade, and caters to the global conceptions of what the work should look like. There are, however, many contemporary artists who are doing work that is very challenging and ground-breaking, not only in visual arts, but also in theatre, dance, and music. Over ten years ago now, the Bangkok Performance Conference was held here, and was an interesting interjection into the way art is perceived here and globally.
This was sponsored by the ASA, the Art Service Association, based in Koln, Germany, whose mission is to create networks among artists who are working in an interdisciplinary context. They worked with Chulalongkorn University to put together a two-day conference whose purpose was to investigate the trends and push the limits of contemporary performance work. Focusing on Asia, but including artists and scholars from around the world, there was a very exciting list of participants. The focuses of the ASA’s conferences are multiple, but they always include academic components, so that they are not merely festivals for entertainment, but are searching for the questions that will help performers and scholars to find new boundaries to press against.
